(NS 4466 4011) Asslos (NAT) and remains of Tower (NR)

OS 6" map (1968)

The tower, fortalice or manor-house of Auchinloss or Assloss is mentioned in 1592. It is still in good condition and is in use as a milk-house (Name Book 1895).

J Paterson 1852

At Asslos there is a small tower incorporated in modern farm buildings. The tower, 6m by 8m with walls 1m thick, has been completely renovated and re-roofed, prior to which it had a parapet with angle-turrets (information from Mrs H Montgomerie, Assloss) the upper part being entirely removed. It now serves as an outbuilding.

Visited by OS (EGC) 8 February 1962

The tower is as described and in good repair; the exterior is white-washed. The lower floor is vaulted, with a probably original slit-window in the W wall.

Revised at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (JRL) 7 August 1982.
