(NS 4009 3961) Cairn (NR) (site of)

OS 1:10000 map (1979)

Four stone coffins, one of which contained human bones, were found some years before 1856 by the present occupier of Carmyle, at this spot, pointed out by reliable local residents (J and W Fulton, Carmyle).

Name Book 1856

A pre-1846 newspaper report (Kilmarnock Journal) describes the finds of six cists, each containing a small quantity of calcined bones collected in a heap in its centre, on Mr Fulton's farm of Waterpark. They were found when a cairn, seen to be of stones when its surface was removed, was being levelled. The largest cist measured 3ft by 1 3/4 feet by

from 1ft to 1 1/2ft deep.

Another cist, "similar in every respect" was found in the adjoining field when the railway was being constructed.

D McNaught 1912

There is no trace of this cairn, the site has been mutilated by railway embankments and colliery workings. No further information was obtained from enquiries at the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS), Ayr Museum, or Dick Institute, Kilmarnock.

Visited by OS (DS) 15 August 1956
