Archaeology Notes

NS43NW 24 41618 35254 (41531 35272 Old Limekiln)

NS 4162 3525. A building constructed in castellated style, but in actual fact a colliery building. It is very deceptive and many enquiries are made as to its history. Probably early 19th century work (J Young, Caprington estate).

This building is a small rectangular tower, 6.0 by 8.0m, which, when viewed from a distance, has the appearance of a small keep. The walls are only 0.7m thick. Not an antiquity.

Visited by OS (JLD) 9 June 1954

As described.

Visited by OS (JRL) 3 July 1982.

Scheduled as Blacksyke, engine house [comprising] the remains of an engine house, a lime kiln and other associated structures.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 22 March 2002.
