Archaeology Notes

NS37NE 22 c. 39 75.

'In the year 1686 Dr. Irvine said that there were the remains of a great Roman Fort at the town of Dumbarton'.

R Stuart 1845

There are no visible remains of a fort to be seen and no further information was found.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 30 January 1963

NS c. 40 74 The Military Way is believed to have extended westwards beyond the fort at Old Kilpatrick and it has been suggested that it may have run to a fort and harbour at Dumbarton. Alternatively it is possible that there could have been a fort at Dumbuck (NS c. 42 74) guarding the N end of a ford across the River Clyde.

J Horsley 1732; K A Steer 1964.
