(NS 3628 4431) Auchenharvie Castle (NR) (remains of)

OS 6" map (1970)

NMRS REFERENCE:

Architect: Allan Stevenson & Cassells, 1937.

Plans: at Darley Hay Partnership, Ayr.

(Undated) information in NMRS.

Auchenharvie Castle is a simple keep, the corbelling to the parapet recalling that on Law Castle and Barr Castle, and judging from the styling, of the same date (i.e. 15th century).

The structure is now a ruin, 36 1/2 by 28 1/2 ft, with walls 6ft thick. It is much destroyed, the interior vaults and the greater part of two sides having gone.

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1892

The remains of this keep are in poor condition. Quarrying has left it standing isolated on a small rocky portion of the hill. The S and W walls remain about 7.0m high, while the N wall stands 3.0m high. An entrance is in the W wall. The parapet has gone, except for a portion of the corbelling on the S wall, and the fragment of an angle turret. The walls, which are of mortared rubble with ashlar quoins, are 2.0m thick.
