Archaeology Notes

NS31NE 7 c. 379 158.

A (14th century (Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1936)) pitcher was found at Perclewan in 1833. It is made of coarse clay, furnished with a handle and a small spout, ornamented with a man's face and hands, and is badly worked, presumably on a wheel. It was covered with a greenish glaze. It is 13" high, 4 3/4" diameter across the mouth, 5 3/4" diameter at base, and 26" greatest circumference. Donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1935 by Sir G Macdonald (Accession no. ME 480).

J Smith 1895; NSA 1845; D Wilson 1863

Local enquiries at Purclewan failed to reveal the precise find-spot of this pitcher.

Visited by OS (JLD) 12 December 1955.
