Archaeology Notes

The first church built at Maybole stood in the centre of the churchyard which is situated in the centre of the town. It was founded in 1193, and was dedicated to St Cuthbert. Its site may still be traced, and two hundred years ago (about 1680) it was built in the shape of a 'T', with the parish school at the E end of it.

A plaque on the wall outside the churchyard states: 'Churchyard of the Parish of Maybole. Church founded by Duncan, Earl of Carrick in 1193. Dedicated to St Cuthbert. Chaplainry of St Ninian founded by Sir Gilbert Kennedy of Dunure in 1451. Last interment was in 1914.'
