Insc: "Sacred to the Memory of John Rankin ESQ Merchant in Greenock Who Died March 17 1829 in the 70 Year of His Age And of His Wife Elizabeth Whose Demise Took Place On August 9 1831 Aged 68 Their Three Sons Whose Absence in Distant Quarters of the Clobe Debarred Them From Receiving the Last Embraces of Their Respected Parents Have Erected this Monument Over Their Grave in Token of Final Affectional and Piety."
