(NS 0335 3189) Site of Viking Burial (NR).

Umbo and Sax of Single-edge Sword found AD 1896 (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1924)

In 1896, when levelling the ground for building a house at Millhill, a small gravel mound was removed. Some 3-4ft from the surface, fragments of a Viking single-edged sword and shield-boss were found. Their types cannot well be regarded as later than the middle of the 8th century, a surprising early date for a Viking burial in Scotland.

The shield-boss and sword were exhibited in Glasgow in 1911, the shield-boss being subsequently donated to the NMAS.

J Balfour 1910; Palace of History 1911; S Grieg 1940; A O Curle, M Olsen and H Shetelig 1954.

No further information could be obtained regarding these or any subsequent finds. The site falls within a private garden.
