Archaeology Notes ( - 1971)

NR89NE 18 8554 9630.

NR 856 963. Cup and ring marked stone: Across the valley from NR89NE 15, NR89NE 16, NR89NE 17 just inside a dyke enclosing woodland above arable, a flat-topped boulder 22' x 11'3" x 3'10" high at S, has a cup mark almost at its centre, and 7 others, one with a faint ring, and probably more very faint cups. There are possible faint cups on other boulders uphill from this site.

M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964.

This cup marked boulder was located at NR 8553 9632. Only the central cup and one other were definitely identified as the surface of the boulder is almost completely mossed over.

Surveyed at 1:2500. (See also NR89NE 21.)

Visited by OS (RD) 21 October 1971.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1983)

NR 855 963. On the floor of a side valley about 330m SE of Kilbride farmhouse, there are two decorated erratic boulders (Campbell and Sandeman 1964). The larger lies about 20m NNE of a field-wall, and on the SW end of its flat upper face it has a single, much worn cup-and-ring marking which measures 160mm overall. About 50m to the NE there is a smaller boulder which bears two plain cupmarks (65mm by 10mm).

Location Notes: The panel lies in its original location of NR 85589 96325. It is located in an area with other rock art, Kilbride 9 (ScRAP ID: 3277; Canmore ID: 39437) is located downhill, to the SW, by approximately 25m and Kilbride 11 is located uphill by c.25m to the NE. Overall the slope has an aspect to the SW and sits just above the arable land of Kilbride Glen. The panel is located in an area of rough moorland that is lightly wooded and populated with bracken. The panel has views to the S into Kilbride Glen and beyond into a wider section of Kilmartin Glen. To the E, there is an area of light forestry of mainly birch trees. The panel is on a boulder which is embedded slightly into the hillside and was covered by some moss and obscured by vegetation and bracken at the time of recording.

This panel was previous recorded under the same record as Kilbride 9 (ScRAP ID 131; Canmore ID: 39437) which has been separated into it's own unique record.

Panel Notes: The panel is a large spherical boulder in its original location in the landscape. It is approximately 4.3m long, 3.2m wide and 1.4m in height. The panel faces SE with the carved surface sloping 10 degrees in the same orientation. The boulder is medium grain, friable schist with quartz veins and fissures on a relatively smooth surface. The motifs consist of one probable and one possible cup mark; the definite cup mark has a possible extending radial line. These however have no obvious pattern and any potential evidence of peck marks is not visible because of the severe weathering to the boulder.
