Archaeology Notes

NR83NW 3 8137 3784

(Centred NR 8137 3784) Earthwork, Portrigh Strip (Site).

An earthwork consisting of a rampart and external ditch is revealed by crop markings on National Survey RAF air photographs (106G Scot/UK 46 3058-9) in the level field that borders the E side of Portrigh Strip, 640m S of Carradale. The work was probably oval on plan with maximum internal measurements of 70m from N to S by 61m from E to W, but the W side lies within the wood and is not visible on the photographs. At the time of the visit, shortly after the hay had been cut, the ditch was clearly marked by a belt of clover about 3.5m in width.

RCAHMS 1971, visited 1955; Information from RCAHMS 6" map.

No trace of this feature was seen at the time of visit, when the field was in pasture.

Visited by OS (JB) 26 February 1978.
