Archaeology Notes

HP50SE 2 5722 0418.

(Area: HP 571 042) A midden containing fragments of typical Viking steatite bowls, as well as an iron axe, part of a rotary quern and a large quantity of animal bones, has been partially eroded by the sea on the west shore of Burga Sand and some 263yds from the Underhoull farmstead, (HP50SE 1). The nearest parallel to the axe is from Straumi in Iceland.

This suggests that a second long-house probably exists somewhere on this SW shore of the bay.

A Small 1967

Midden material and rough walling, are visible in the cliff edge at HP 5720 0422.

Surveyed at 1/2500.
