(NR 6626 5462) Cairn (NR)

Carn na Faire) (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1924)

Situated at a height of 38m OD, this cairn crowns the rocky headland that forms the most northerly point of Gigha. It is composed mainly of large angular blocks and, although now heavily robbed, it still measures 17m in diameter and 1.8m in height. A small modern cairn stands on the older structure. It is reported that when part of the cairn was being removed during the 19th century, a stone was found, measuring 0.7m square, which had markings of an unspecified nature on it. The stone was replaced in the cairn and is no longer visible. Without excavation it is impossible to determine the significance of this stone or of its markings, but it seems probable that it originally formed part of a cist.

RCAHMS 1971, visited 1963.

A cup-marked stone is said to have been found when the cairn was partly removed in 1899. It was left in the cairn. Indications of possible burials were also found.

OS 6" map annotated by C M Piggott, September 1948; Information contained in letter from R E MacCallum to OS, 24 Ocotber 1960 and from Typescript by R E MacCallum, 1962.

Some kerb stones in situ give the dimensions of the cairn as 9.5m diameter, with a present height of 0.7m.

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (J M) 18 January 1978.

Cairn, Carn na Faire, Gigha.

Situated at a height of 38 m O.D., this cairn crowns the rocky headland that forms the most northerly point of the island of Gigha. It is reported (Anderson, Gigha, 26) that when part of the cairn was being removed during the 19th century, a stone was found, measuring 0.7 m square, which had markings of an unspecified nature on it.
