Stone type: red sandstone
Place of discovery: NO 8243 8128
Present location: privately owned in Devon (2006).
Evidence for discovery: found amongst rubble after renovations to farm outbuildings in 1964, and kept at the castle until taken to Devon.
Present condition: broken and damaged.
Description
Carved in low relief on both sides, his fragment was part of the upper portion of a cross-slab with a rounded top. Face A bears part of the upper and right-hand arms of a cross, outlined by a roll moulding and infilled with loose interlace, with a ring filled with traces of key pattern. The terminals of the arms and the opening of the circular armpit are ornamented with spirals, and there is an additional circle within the armpit. Face B bears a flatband moulding along its edge but otherwise appears to be plain.
Date: ninth or tenth century.
