About 1880 four cists were discovered near Stonehaven market cross (NO 8766 8551). Two of them (aligned N and S) were about 1.5m apart, one measuring 1.37m in length by 0.46m in breadth and containing an inhumation. The other two lay about 18m away, beside the gasworks (NO 876 854); on several occastions before 1914 'similar remains' were found in this area.
