Fighter Sector Headquarters

Sub-Filter Room November 1941 - 1945

This has been demolished but can be clearly seen in post-war vertical photography. The large brick and concrete operations block, similar to that at RAF Tain (NH88SW 14.03) was established as a Fighter sector operations room to co-ordinate RAF fighter response to German air raids. It was also a sub-filter room, filtering information from radar stations in Lewis, Harris, Skye, as well as Point of Stoer and Sango on the mainland. The filtered information was then passed to the main filter room at Inverness (NH64NE 642), but the workload at Inverness was reduced by the information having been already filtered at Stornoway.
