The bow section of HMS Albacore, a Royal Navy destroyer, has been discovered on the seabed in Shapinsay Sound at 59° 00.027’ N, 002° 51.079’ W in 29m of water. HMS Albacore struck a mine on 9 March 1917 at 4.30am resulting in an explosion that killed 18 men. The remaining section of the ship stayed afloat, and she was later repaired and returned to service.
