(NO 7748 7946) Court Stane (NR)
OS 1:10,000 map, (1974)
A standing stone 6ft 9ins high with a circumference of from 7 1/2 to 10ft, standing in a prominent position and commanding a wide view. The Court Stone of Mondynes is spoken of as the judgement seat of the Barony of Mondynes, although there seems to be no evidence to connect it with any functions, judicial or otherwise.
J C Watt 1914.
In the early 19th century the stone was said (NSA 1845) to commemorate the death of Duncan II, murdered by the Earl or Thane of the Mearns. 'Duncan's shade' or 'field' lies nearby.
New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; J Stuart 1822.
Court State, a standing stone, is as described.
Resurveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (R L) 6 December 1967.
Oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 2001) has recorded cropmarks around the Court Stane which may be the W arc of a curvilinear enclosure that measures about 25m in diameter. The standing stone lies at the inner S edge of this possible enclosure.
