Archaeology Notes

NO75NW 51 centred 7215 5800

(Location cited as NMO 722 580). Union Maltings, built c. 1860 as a flax mill. A fine 4-storey and attic, 21-bay rubble building with projecting end bays and a central hoist. The end bays have panels with decorative wings at top-floor level. The windows are small-paned with cast-iron frames. At the rear is a 6-bay central wing, converted to a double kiln with square-louvred vents, and a long 3-storey rubble block of conventional maltings, with a rectangular kiln with louvred ventilator. Closed 1973.
