OS 6" map, (1959)

Thornton Castle, a seat of the Strachans, consisted of a round tower at the NE corner said to be the oldest part of the building, a square tower dated 1531, and a building dated 1662 connecting the two. The weather-vane bears the date 1680.

A Jervise 1875-9; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; Name Book 1863.

Thornton Castle is still occupied and according to the present owner (Sir C Thornton-Kemsley, Thornton Castle) the base of a tower on the N is a survival of a 14th century building. The part of the castle dated 1531 is an 'L'-plan tower.

Visited by OS (RL) 18 August 1971.
