(NO 6675 5988) Dun Castle (NR) (Site of)

(NO 6670 5994) Gateway (NR)

OS 1/10,000 map, (1972)

There is no trace of Dun Castle, which belonged to the Erskines (Warden 1880-5). An ice-house at NO 6679 5990 is said to have been the vault of the castle (ONB 1858) but this can hardly be so as it is set on the sloping bank of a stream. The arched gateway is said to be of possibly early 16th century date (Jervise 1861), but appears to be post - 16th century It is 3.5 high, 5.0m long and 1.0m thick with ring moulding on the north side. The south side has been refaced.

Name Book 1858; A Jervise 1861; A J Warden 1880-5.

Activities

Field Visit (April 1978)

Dun Castle NO 667 599 NO65NE

Dun Castle was situated on the same steep-sided promontory as the old parish church NO 65 NE 2, on the W side of the Den of Dun. A 16th-century gateway at NO 6670 5994 and a fragment of masonry beside the ice-house at NO 6679 5990 are all that survive of the curtain wall which probably enclosed most of the summit of the promontory.

RCAHMS 1978, visited April 1978

(Name Book, Forfar, No. 17, p. 12; Warden 1880-85, iii, 169)
