Watching Brief (February 2015)
NR 84667 79222 A watching brief was carried out in February 2015 during the stripping of topsoil and peat on the footprint of a powerhouse, a pipeline route and a small portion of a new track. A thin layer of black, charcoal-rich silt comprising a mixture of deciduous wood was hand excavated within a ditch cut of the new access track. A small number of lithics was recovered, including a scraper and scale-flaked knife. Birch from the deposit was dated to 2024–1890 cal BC (95% confidence, SUERC-60426). The deposit is tentatively interpreted as the remains of a funerary pyre. The charcoalrich deposit was sealed by later colluvium.
