Activities

Excavation

An archaeological evaluation undertaken by AOC Archaeology in 2016 revealed a series of pits and curvilinear features situated to the rear of the farmhouse. Three shards of medieval white gritty ware were

recovered from the fills of the features giving a probable 12th/13th century date. Following these findings a programme of further archaeological works consisting of excavation and archaeological monitoring was

initiated. This revealed a more complete plan of the existing archaeological features including several linear boundary ditches, a probable quarry pit, a mortar spread and several other pit, posthole and linear features.

A larger assemblage of medieval white gritty ware was recovered. The archaeological works confirmed the evidence of ‘backland’ activity related to the early medieval settlement of Birgham.
