Note (1978)

Ethie Castle NO 690 473 NO64NE

An oval enclosure measuring about 50m in maximum diameter, has been recorded as a cropmark NE of Ethie Castle.

RCAHMS 1978

Desk Based Assessment (27 October 2021)

A reconsideration of this alleged enclosure has revealed that the cropmark corresponds exactly with the shape of an oval plantation depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Forfarshire 1865, Sheet XLI). The ditch that is visible as a cropmark probably provided material for an accompanying internal bank or wall. What appear to be pits within the interior are probably tree-holes. The location of a small pond or water-filled pit adjacent to the plantation on the SE, which is also depicted on the map, is also visible as a cropmark.

Information from HES Survey and Recording (JRS) 27 October 2021.
