Govan 29 (St Constantine), Glasgow, Renfrewshire, cross-shaft fragment
Measurements: H 2.00m, W 0.50m, D 0.23m
Stone type: sandstone
Place of discovery: NS c 5537 6588
Present location: in the nave of Govan Old Parish Church.
Evidence for discovery: found in the churchyard in the nineteenth century, probably re-used as a gravestone.
Present condition: both broad faces are heavily worn and the top has been roughly rounded, suggesting re-use as a gravestone for two periods of time.
Description
One broad face bears traces of a rectangular panel with decorative projections at the corners. In contrast to the heavily worn main faces, the narrow faces of the shaft are in better condition, with panels of interlace divided by plain bands and a plain border. One panel contains a figurative scene showing a seated profile figure on the left and a standing profile figure on the right, which Fisher interpreted as David about to be anointed king by Samuel.
Date: ninth or tenth century.
