Govan 15 (St Constantine), Glasgow, Renfrewshire, recumbent gravestone
Measurements: H 1.46m, W 0.59m, D 0.15m
Stone type: sandstone
Place of discovery: NS c 5537 6588
Present location: in the nave of Govan Old Parish Church.
Evidence for discovery: found in the graveyard in the nineteenth century, having been re-used as an eighteenth-century graveslab.
Present condition: very worn, and the head and foot of the slab are damaged.
Description
This slab has a marked taper, narrowing towards the foot. It has a wide plain border, missing from the head and foot, and the side-arms of the cross extend to meet the border. The cross has an inner incised line round its outline and circular armpits. There appear to be traces of internal ornament, probably interlace, filling its interior, but this has mostly either worn away or been removed in order to add the inscription T A . E A above the date 1723. The cross is surrounded by panels of interlaced ornament, possibly with a median line to the cords.
Date: tenth or eleventh century.
