Archaeology Notes

NO59NE 28 5688 9978.

(NO 5690 9977) Gibbet Stone (NR).

OS 6" map, (1959)

A large stone built into the south wall of the road, shaped like a mill-stone and with a circular hole in the centre. It is traditionally said to be the stone into which the gibbet-tree was inserted.

Name Book 1865.

The Gibbet Stone, roughly circular, 1.5m diameter with a 12cm. circular hole in the centre, was moved to NO 5688 9978 on the N side of the road, and set in concrete, in 1962 by the Deeside Field Club. A metal plaque states, "This Gallows Stone was originally placed on the adjacent Gallows Hillock where justice was administered by the Barons of Barony until deprived of their feudal powers in 1747".

The stone is not a mill-stone and is probably a socket-stone of some sort.

Visited by OS (R L) 8 June 1972.
