Desk Based Assessment (14 June 2016)

All that is now visible on vertical aerial photographs of this lighthouse is a circular foundation, measuring about 6.3m in diameter, which sits on a reef or artificial mound of rubble up to 14m in diameter. The lighthouse, which stood on the northern edge of the deep water channel, is depicted on an 1846 Admiralty Chart (Greenock to Dumbarton) published by Hydrographic Office in 1850 [NLS.MS5846/50 (Admiralty Chart 2006] and it is annotated 'Cardross Light Red 20 feet high'. The lighthouse is also shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Dumbartonshire 1864, Sheet XXI) but by 1914 it was a ruin and it is depicted as such on the revised 2nd edition map (Dumbartonshire 1922, Sheet nXXINE).

Information from HES Survey and Recording (JRS) 14 June 2016.
