(NO 5397 5685) Mote of Melgund (NAT)

Tumulus (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map, (1970)

A large, earthen tumulus said by Jervise (1859) to have been removed some years before 1856 although Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB 1861) notes 'a remarkable knoll' in 1861.

Urns and two or three cists containing bones are said to have been found in it.

Only a low irregular swelling is evident on the highest point of an east-west ridge. The farmer says it is a rocky outcrop.

A Jervise 1859; Name Book 1861; Visited by OS (JLD) 8 July 1958.
