Activities

Field Visit (9 September 2014)

This bridge, probably of early 19th century date, carried the southern driveway of Fordell House (NT18NW 16) over the Fordell Burn. It comprises a single span arch measuring 3.8m in width by 2.4m in height, which is faced with dressed voussoirs on each side; the remaining fabric of the bridge is mainly quarried whinstone blocks but the vault is of brick. On the N side of the bridge, E of the main arch, is a smaller arch of the same design. The corresponding arch on the S side is not visible. The decking measures 4.7m in breadth and if the bridge ever had parapet, these have been cast down into the stream bed below.
