(NO 5191 3648) Castle Hill (NAT)

OS 6" map (1926)

There are still traces of the foundations of the Castle of Downie on a mound at Old Downie.

A Jervise 1853; A J Warden 1884.

A small, low hill. It is supposed a castle once stood here, but there is no evidence to authenticate its existence.

Name Book 1858

This isolated, almost rectangular mound is flat-topped and measures c.15.0m x 12.0m on its summit; it is 3.5m high, with a small quarry dug into its E side. At the SE angle, near the summit, a fragment of what seems to be a dry-stone wall can be seen protruding from the mound. the surrounding ground is low-lying and in places marshy. Although there is no evidence for a castle existing here, the mound is a possible site for a small keep.
