Activities

Field Visit (16 June 1931)

Cairn, The Runie, Turl Stack.

In the extreme NW of the parish, at the bottom of a steep rocky bank about 25 yds. to the left of a small burn which flows into the sea opposite Tainga Skerries, is a dilapidated cairn, covering an area about 25 ft. in diameter, and showing some slight indications of a surrounding wall.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 16 June 1931.

Field Visit (13 June 1968)

HU25NE 11 2623 5871.

(HU 2622 5872) Cuml (OE).

OS 6" map, Shetland, 2nd ed., (1900)

A cairn of bare stones somewhat mutilated by later construction, situated on a SW slope. It measures c.8.5m ENE-WSW by c.6.5m NNW-SSE, with the kerb partially visible for most of its periphery, save in the WSW where tumble obscures what appears to be a facade, suggesting a possible heel-shaped cairn. There are some indications of a probable passage leading from the centre of this facade, and possibly the remains of a chamber, but it is impossible to identify this feature as a definite heel-shaped cairn without excavation.

Visited by OS (N K B) 13 June 1968
