Sbc Note

A 'Tile Works' is depicted on the OS 1st Edition 6" map of Roxburghshire. It consisted of two buildings, a kiln and a pit (presumably clay). The The tile works was likely established in the late 18th century or early 19th to create roofing materials for the construction of Newcastleton prior to the introduction of slate. The tile works was accessed via a ford at the base of Winchester Street where it met the Liddel Water, and a track extending north from the ford.

The tile works does not appear on later 19th century mapping.
