(NO 5057 1672) In discussing the site of the Franciscan Monastery at St Andrews (Fife 9 SW 4, centred at NO 5064 1680) C J Lyon (1843) gives evidence of the former existence of a gate, the Market Gate, at or near the junction of the present St Mary's Place and Hope Street, NO 5057 1672.
He first refers to the fact that the Monastery was "near the market gate", and quotes Town Charters which he had examined. One of these describes a tenement "without the port of the Market Street, on the north side thereof, between the crofts of George Allan on the west and the place of the Minor Friars on the east". Another, of September 1559, refers to the property "lately possessed by the Minor Friars, lying on the north side of the market-gate, and going north as far as the North Street".
