(NO 5157 0429) Ruin (NAT)

OS 6" map (1854)

Balcormo. This name applies to a large ruinous building to which are attached modern farm buildings. The ruin was formerly a mansion house and lately a farmhouse. The date 1388 appears above the doorway.

Name Book 1853.

The lands of Balcormo with the tower, fortalice and mill were granted to Peter Arnot by a royal charter dated at Edinburgh, 6th June, 1549.

Reg Magni Sig Reg Scot 1546-80.

No trace of this building could be found. The date stone mentioned by the Commission is now above the doorway of the modern Balcormo House (NO 5163 0436), built in 1872.

Visited by OS (WDJ), 20 August 1968.

An unroofed L-shaped building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife and Kinross 1855, sheet 26), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1994).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK), 17 September 1999.
