Archaeology Notes

HP50SE 15 5751 0058.

(HP 5752 0061) Cairn (NR) Stone Cist found AD 1825.

OS 6" map, Shetland, 2nd ed., (1900).

A much-dilapidated cairn lying within an enclosure adjoining two sheep-folds.

Many of the large blocks of stone of which it was constructed have apprently been used to build the surrounding wall and shelters.

The marginal outline can no longer be distinguished, but in their present condition the remains cover an area about 35' in diameter.

A cist measuring 3'6" by 2'3" by 15" but lacking the slab on the east side, is visible among the debris. It lies with its major axis NNW - SSE, and has been formed of unusually massive slabs, the one on the west being 1'5" thick and the one on the south 1'2".

The OS map states that it was uncovered in 1825, but there is no record of its contents.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1930.

This cairn is so destroyed that few features are left except three sides of the cist and about 6.0m of the SW arc of the kerb. Several upright stones including an upright block in a straight line in the SE suggest a facade but are more likely due to later mutilation.

Revised at 1/10,000.
