(NO 4028 3012) Site of Whitehall Palace (NR)

OS 1:500 plan, Dundee, Forfarshire, (1870)

The supposed Palace of Whitehall, said to have been occupied by Mary Queen of Scots in 1561, was really the tenement called "Lyon's Room", whose name Sir Patrick Lyon of Carse changed to "Whitehall" when he put up the carved armorial bearings of Charles II over the entrance c. 1660. All the buildings were removed in 1883 to permit the formation of the new Whitehall Street.

A C Lamb 1895.

Site is now occupied by modern buildings.

Visited by OS (J L D) 1 November 1958.
