Activities

Excavation (8 April 2011 - 9 August 2012)

An archaeological intrusive evaluation undertaken at Humbie Road, Newton Mearns commenced with the examination of 5% by area of a proposed development site which extends to 5.86ha. Subsequently two trenches were extended to enable examination of features and four additional trenches were excavated to confirm the alignment and character of another feature. A fragment of stone and brick surface was located at the site of the former nineteenth century Eastfield Farm on the western margin of the site. Three linear ditch features were also located, two were considered fragments of furrows from the nineteenth century while the third was a 98m stretch of shallow ditch that could be related to open arable fields from the mid eighteenth century. In their current condition none of these features were assessed to be significant in terms of the proposed development.
