OS 6"map, (1959)

An old Tower, said to be the remains of the old Castle of Ruthven stands a short distance NW of Ruthven Mansion. It was owned by the Crichtons in 1510, but in 1790, it was pulled down and the present mansion built.

Name Book 1863; W Wilson 1917.

A small well preserved tower with a modern roof. It is rectangular with a rounded north side and measures 6.2m NS by 5.4m transversely. There are large horizontal gun-loops on three sides with a small blocked rectangular window, and a slit embrasure in the E wall.

Castle of Ruthven NO 302 479 NO34NW 3

All that remains of this castle is a D-plan tower (6.2m by 4.5m) standing to a height of two storeys; the wall of the vaulted ground floor is pierced by three wide-mouthed gun ports.
