Archaeology Notes

NO33SE 43 3979 3013.

(NO 3979 3013) Site of West Port (NR) 1547

OS 1:500 plan, Dundee, Forfarshire, (1870)

The West Port stood at NO 3993 3013 until 1650 or 1668 when it was taken down and re-erected about the present line of South Tay St, ie. NO 3985 3013. It was finally demolished in 1757.

The OS siting is too far west for the line of the town wall, and would therefore appear to be erroneous.

None of the sites is indicated in the modern roadway.

A C Lamb 1895; J M Beatt 1878; Kidd 1909; Visited by OS (J L D) 1 September 1958.

Activities

Observation (1857)

During street-draining operations in 1857 at West Port … a wall and an outer ditch were discovered, although their alignment is not noted…. The claim that they were part of the defences erected about 1547 by the English or French was considered erroneous… Now it seems likely that they were indeed part of the western defences of the town.
