Cockerton Cleuch

Farmstead

NT 78689 17778

This farmstead lies beside the public road on a terrace immediately to the NW of the confluence of Cockerton Cleuch and Capehope Burn. It comprises the footings of at least two buildings and the remains of two possible enclosures. The better preserved of the two buildings measures 19.5m from NNW to SSE by 3.9m transversely, within turf and stone walls up to 0.3m in height and 1m spread. The interior is divided into three compartments and there is a possible outshot extending about 5m from the SSE wall. To the S and W of the building there are two turf banks which may be the remains of a subrectangular enclosure measuring approximately 30m from NNW to SSE by 15m transversely. To the NW of this are the fragmentary footings of a small hut and a further stretch of bank to the N, which may have been part of an enclosure.
