(NO 3089 3613) Lundie Castle on site of (NAT) Castle (NR)

OS 6" map, (1971)

The site of a residence of the Duncan or Camperdown family from the remains of which the present farm-house is built.

Lundie Castle is said to have been built a little before 1539 and was in ruins in 1823, when it consisted three sides of a large, square tower 30' high (Carrie 1881).

The remains of an outbuilding still existed in 1911 and a number of carved stones are built into the walls of a cottage on the site (Elliott 1911). A slab, dated 1677, is built into the Mill of Lundie.

Name Book 1860; A J Warden 1880-5; J Carrie 1881; A Elliott 1911.

The modern house of Lundie Castle is on the site of the early structure. A cottage at NO 3093 3609 has a datestone '1683' in its south wall.

Visited by OS (J L D) 25 April 1958.
