A long row of largely single storey brick built stables on a narrow strip of land extending from the High Street to Millhill Lane. There are 3/4 different buildings, the one nearest to the High Street being a 2 storeyed mews with a high pitched slated roof. Most of the rest are shallow pitched or flat roofed.
Images in the RCAHMS collection show access to the buildings through a pend at 7 High Street, with signage "Commercial Inn Stables". Photographs dating from the 1960s show two storey structures abutted the main building (7 High Street) with the row of brick built stables running down the close, which was surfaced in setts with drainage running alongside the stables.
With its proximity to the Musselburgh Race Course, the stables were understood to have been in use until the last few years. The 2 storey section is likely to be earlier and probably originally connected to the High Street buildings, thought to have been in use latterly by jockeys/stablehands.
