Archaeology Notes

HY53NE 32 5654 3958.

Contouring the steep side of Noup Hill overlooking Calfsound, where the slope begins to lessen towards the summit, is a dyke partly buried in the peat. It is traceable from HY 5657 3961 to HY 5647 3947. The structure is of massive sandstone boulders up to 0.4m high, edge-set into the hillside, their faces transverse to the slope. On the W, uphill side of this dyke at HY 5654 3958 is a sub-rectangular enclosure of similar construction, 16m E-W by 32m. For part of its N side a double row of boulders is apparent, giving a wall 0.6m w ide. Immediately W of the enclosure is a quarry, and at its NE corner is a quarry-like hollow in which are several deliberate looking edge-set slabs which may be remains of an ancient structure.
