At least two, and probably more, souterrains were discovered c.1771-2 in fields lying between Mudhall and Coupar-Grange House. Playfair mentions 'several' in the original account of the discovery, were c.6' wide within walls, 5' deep and 40+' long. The sides were built in, and paved with rough stones. They were not straight, but built in part of a circle.

According to Barty, no trace of them remained in 1843, but a recent visit by Wainwright confirms both the accuracy of Playfiar's identification, and the location given by OS.

A souterrain described by Pennant as 'near Coupargrange' is considered by Wainwright to be the same as that described by Playfair, above.

Field Visit (6 February 1969)
There is no trace of these souterrains; the site is on top of gently rising ground. Enquiries at Coupar Grange factor's office (NO 2300 4270) proved negative. See also NO 24 SW 13.
