Field Visit (14 June 2010)

This sheepfold, which is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Shetland 1882, sheet XLVI), is situated adjacent to the foreshore at the E end of Stany Fields. It comprises a subrectangular enclosure measuring 30m from NNE to SSW by up to 17m transversely within a stone wall, which is broken on the SW where a concrete sheep-dip has been inserted. Adjoining the SSW end of the enclosure, and linked to it by a narrow entrance, is a smaller, roughly oval enclosure which measures a maximum of 7m across within its stone wall. A wall, largely reduced to a rickle of rubble, extends NNE from the NW corner of the larger enclosure and runs for a distance of 60m before turning ENE and running for another 35m, at which point it can no longer be seen in peaty ground.
