Orkney Smr Note (November 1997)

Just N of Newark Farm Cottages, extending from modern end of concrete reinforcing and pier northwards for c.60m is a farm mound consisting of classic fine earth/ sand/ tips/ midden layers with patches of stonework. The mound rises to a max. height of c.5m and sits on an orangey clay base.

42m N from the pier lies a patch of walling consisting of about 10 courses of small, rounded stones; 2 drains - one beneath the wall and one within - emerge end on to the shore. The drains are box-shaped, capped with a single slab. The hole is c. 0.4m square. The S drain can be seen to continue some 1.5-2m back into the mound. The drains are of built walling some 5 stones high on each side.

The midden contains animal and fish bone, and shell but not in thick deposits.

The mound is nearly bisected by the retreating shoreline.
