Activities

Field Visit (27 March 2010)

This milestone stands on the W verge of the B981 (formerly part of the ‘Great North Road’) at Prathouse. Roughly triangular in section with a rounded rear, the stone stands 0.75 m high, though it leans to the W, by 0.33m across the two main (dressed) faces and 0.45m across the roughly-hewn back-side. Its pointed top has been shaped to house a cast-iron information cap, which is now missing but probably indicated the distances of 11 miles to Kinross and 5 miles to North Queensferry. The milestone is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife and Kinross 1853, sheet 35).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 27 March 2010.
