This cropmark represents one of three large oval areas of woodland first depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Perthshire and Clackmannanshire 1900, Sheet XCIX.11). Whilst these areas may have been laid out as part of a designed landscape, Hall (1998, 173) has suggested that they may mark the sites of clay-pits.
