(NO 250 212). The Mote of Erroll, which appears to have been located on the west bank of the Pow of Errol near its confluence with the Firth of Tay (J Adair, Map of Strathearn, 1720), was probably the site of the original motte castle of the Hays, dating from the 12th century. Two farmhouses and outbuildings at Port Allen now occupy the site and, apart from a fairly deep ditch some distance west of the main farmhouse which may possibly have been artificially made, no traces of any mound or fortifications now exist (H Moll, Map of South Part of Perthshire, 1725; G Vaulk and P Schenk map 1710).

At the date of visit no artificial features were visible at this location. The motte of the Hays is almost certainly Low Knowe (NO22SW 2), and there is no reason to anticipate a second motte in the immediate vicinity of Errol.
